In slab casting, controlling molten steel movement means controlling surface quality, meniscus stability, internal cleanliness and caster continuity. But a slab cannot be treated like a billet. Its wide, flat geometry requires a different approach based on linear devices able to guide or brake the flow in the mold and, further down the machine, to act on the internal solidification structure of the strand.
For this reason, the slab family developed by Rotelec brings together two complementary functions. The first is mold flow control, delivered by systems such as Multi-Mode® EMS, Multi-Mode® EMB and Multi-Mode® EMB+S, which act in the mold to slow down, accelerate, stabilize or rotate liquid steel according to actual casting conditions. The second is control of internal solidification structure along the strand, delivered by S-EMS In Roll and S-EMS Box Type, which help improve slab internal structure, enlarge the equiaxed zone and reduce defects such as ridging and roping in the most sensitive grades.
That distinction is decisive. In the mold, the main objective is to govern the flow pattern and meniscus behavior. Along the strand, the focus shifts to internal quality and solidification homogeneity. This double logic is what makes the slab family more articulated and more strategic.
