EAF EMS
Electromagnetic stirring for Electric Arc Furnaces
INTRODUCTION
EAF EMS is Rotelec’s electromagnetic stirring solution for Electric Arc Furnaces, designed to control liquid steel movement throughout the melting and refining cycle. At the core of the solution is DEAS® (Digital Electromagnetic Active Stirring), a dynamic stirring concept that adapts the steel-bath flow pattern to the actual phase of the heat.
Conventional electromagnetic stirring systems operate with a fixed flow pattern and mainly adjust magnetic field intensity. DEAS® goes further by using two independently controlled electromagnetic stirrers installed beneath the furnace shell and changing the magnetic field configuration according to process needs. The result is a more flexible EAF stirring strategy that supports melting efficiency, bath homogenization, operating consistency and productivity.
HOW IT WORKS
DEAS® uses two independently controlled electromagnetic stirrers installed beneath the furnace shell. The system operates with two distinct stirring modes, each developed for a different stage of the heat.
During the melting phase, the stirrers operate in Opposite Mode. This creates strong peripheral circulation inside the steel bath, increasing turbulence and promoting faster scrap melting and more effective heat transfer.
During refining, the system switches to Concordant Mode. Liquid steel is directed toward the tapping area and recirculated through the furnace, improving temperature distribution, chemical homogenization and overall bath consistency.
The key difference is therefore not simply how strongly the bath is stirred. DEAS® actively changes the electromagnetic field configuration to create the flow pattern that is most suitable for the process phase.
ROLE IN THE PROCESS AND PLANT INTEGRATION
EAF EMS is designed to work as an integrated part of Electric Arc Furnace operation rather than as a standalone stirring device. The stirring strategy works in close connection with furnace automation, allowing the electromagnetic action to follow the different requirements of melting and refining.
The solution combines two independent electromagnetic stirrers with low-frequency IGBT power converters, dedicated cooling systems and a complete automation package. Its modular design allows integration into both new installations and retrofit projects with limited impact on the existing plant layout.
Depending on the plant automation philosophy, the system can operate in Manual or Automatic mode. In automatic operation, the stirring mode and electrical parameters are adjusted according to process requirements, supporting optimal liquid-steel circulation while reducing operator intervention.
The independent control of the two stirring modules also contributes to system reliability. If one stirrer is unavailable, the second can continue to produce a stirring effect in degraded mode, helping maintain process continuity.
For steelmakers looking to make EAF bath-flow control more responsive to the actual process phase, EAF EMS with DEAS® provides a dynamic electromagnetic approach for both new furnaces and retrofit applications.
