INTRODUCTION

Multi-Mode® EMB is Rotelec’s electromagnetic braking solution for thin slab casters operating at very high casting speeds. Mounted behind the backup plates of the mold on a retractable manipulator, it is designed for one specific challenge: controlling mold flow when throughput is high, meniscus behavior becomes more unstable and conventional uniform braking is no longer selective enough.

Multi-Mode® EMB offers three distinct functions — braking, stabilizing and damping — to tackle the flow instabilities that appear in high-speed thin slab casting. Its role is to bring the process back into a controlled operating window where surface quality, shell regularity and machine stability can be maintained.

HOW IT WORKS

The system is installed on a retractable manipulator that moves the inductors just behind the mold backup plates. Unlike conventional electromagnetic brakes that apply one uniform action to the steel flow, MM-EMB is designed to tailor the electromagnetic field in real time according to the instability that has to be corrected.

In practical terms, the system acts on three critical aspects of mold behavior: horizontal meniscus flow, right-left flow bias and vertical meniscus fluctuations. The braking, stabilizing and damping functions are designed for thin slab casters where excessive flow intensity, asymmetry and fluctuation become the dominant causes of quality loss at very high throughput.

ROLE IN THE PROCESS AND PLANT INTEGRATION

MM-EMB is particularly strategic when the caster is already operating in a high-productivity thin slab environment and the main need is not broader mold stirring, but selective braking and stabilization of unstable mold flow. It is a specialized brake technology for high-speed quality casting, not a simplified version of MM-EMS.

From a plant perspective, MM-EMB is integrated around the actual mold geometry, manipulator arrangement, available space, power supply and automation environment. Because its value depends on precise interaction with the mold flow and on stable operation at very high speed, the system has to be engineered as part of the caster rather than added as a generic accessory.
