Multi-Mode® EMB
MultiMode-EMB technology for thin slab casters
POSITIONING
Electromagnetic brakes are mounted on a retractable manipulator which allows the inductors to be moved just behind the backup plates of each mold.
FEATURES
Multi-Mode® Electromagnetic Braking (MM-EMB) is a specialized brake system engineered for thin slab casters running at high casting speeds (> 5 m/min). Unlike conventional brakes that apply a uniform braking action, MM-EMB offers three distinct functions—braking, stabilizing, and damping—to tackle specific flow instabilities in the mould. By tailoring the electromagnetic field in real time, MM-EMB controls horizontal meniscus flow, right-left bias, and vertical meniscus fluctuations.
METALLURGICAL BENEFITS
- Defect reduction: eliminates defects from excessive flow (e.g., slivers, lubrication loss, breakout alarms, longitudinal cracks).
- Quantitative flow control: actively manages steel flow patterns to improve slab quality.
- Meniscus & shell uniformity: controls flows at the meniscus to equalize temperature, and achieve uniform powder melting and shell thickness.
- Operational flexibility: allows variation in casting speed without compromising slab quality, even at very high throughput.
- Productivity gains: reduces downgrade and scrap rates, lowers breakout events, leading to increased yield and a rapid return on investment (approx. one year).
