Multi-Mode® EMB+S
for conventional and thin slab casting
INTRODUCTION
Multi-Mode® EMB+S is Rotelec’s combined electromagnetic braking and stirring system for thin and conventional slab casters. It is a high-end mold-flow-control solution for applications where braking alone is not sufficient and where the caster has to combine high throughput with demanding slab and coil quality targets.
By combining DC braking with linear stirring, Multi-Mode® EMB+S steers liquid steel toward the preferred mold-flow condition. It is a complete process-control platform built for new-generation high-speed quality casters where one fixed electromagnetic action is not enough.
HOW IT WORKS
The braking part of the system generates a DC magnetic field positioned correctly in space and adjusted in intensity. The stirring part uses linear stirrers that generate a traveling magnetic field by means of 2-phase AC current, with direction, intensity and frequency all electrically controlled. The braking and stirring devices are mounted on a retractable manipulator that moves them just behind the mold backup plates.
What makes MM-EMB+S distinctive is the combination of hardware and predictive control. The system uses proprietary software for real-time flow-pattern prediction and automatic parameter adjustment, allowing braking and stirring effects to be combined according to the actual casting condition. This gives the caster a much broader control range than brake-only or stirrer-only solutions.
ROLE IN THE PROCESS AND PLANT INTEGRATION
MM-EMB+S is particularly relevant where the mold is the main leverage point for balancing extreme productivity with strict quality requirements. In those environments, the challenge is not merely to brake or stir the steel, but to combine both actions so that the actual flow pattern can be corrected in real time as casting conditions evolve.
From a plant perspective, integration requires a full system view covering manipulator architecture, space constraints behind the mold, DC and AC power management, automation, predictive software and interaction with the mold’s existing sensors and protection systems.
For slab casters aiming at top-tier mold-flow control on conventional or thin slabs, Multi-Mode® EMB+S is a premium process solution. Contact Rotelec to evaluate the best braking-and-stirring configuration for your caster, steel grades and target throughput.
KEY BENEFITS
- Quantitative correction of single-roll, unstable and weak or strong double-roll flow patterns to optimize slab quality and productivity.
- Better meniscus and shell uniformity through flow control at the meniscus, washing of the solidification front, reduced inclusions and more uniform powder melting and shell thickness.
- Defect reduction on both sides of the mold-flow problem: excessive-flow defects such as slivers, lubrication loss and breakout alarms, and weak or unstable-flow defects such as alumina inclusions, cold meniscus and longitudinal cracks.
- Operational flexibility at very high throughput without sacrificing slab quality.
- Lower downgrade, less scrap, reduced scarfing and grinding, fewer breakout alarms and rapid return on investment.
- A combined brake-and-stirring platform for quality casters where braking and stirring have to work together in real time.
